Team Performance Coaching

Team Coaching

The objectives of any team coaching intervention can fall into a wide number of areas. In overview however, the aim is to achieve movement on a combination of the following:

  • An Aligned Leadership Team.
  • Clarity on the Goals & Roles of the Team and its Individual Parts.
  • Shared Vision & Objectives.
  • Engagement.
  • Self Awareness & Self Responsibility.
  • Focus & Prioritisation.
  • Agreed Ways of Working.

The agenda for the team’s development in meeting its objectives is agreed by the team itself, with boundaries being set as necessary by the leader. Out of this work a clear development agenda is generated aligning the following areas:

  • The Team’s Objectives & Ways of Working.
  • The Organisation’s Objectives.
  • Measures of Success & Review Processes.

In our work with teams we have also learnt that the team benefits enormously from learning and developing a number of core coaching skills for themselves to use both within the team  and with their own vertical teams. The attaining of these skills and abilities promotes and encourages a number of key behaviours and abilities together with a greater degree of self awareness.

Structure & Duration

The central principles that underpin our team coaching programmes are that the skills and behaviours implicit in building an effective team cannot be developed at a single event. We believe that the opportunity to apply the learning in the real world, to review, learn and adapt are essential if the behaviours and disciplines required of the team are to be sustained and fully embedded within the team’s working patterns; those of its individual members and the organisation as a whole.

It is for this reason that our programmes are composed of a number of separate but related events supported by one-on-one coaching from a programme leader.  The team programme consists of a series of interventions that are implemented over time. They consist of the following elements:

  • Pre-programme one to one sessions with each team member in order to clarify personal objectives, requirements and perspectives.
  • A 24 hour ‘launch’ event. (Wherever possible, we recommend that this overnight workshop with the entire team.
  • A series of two half-day follow on workshops with the team over a series of months to embed learning and the new disciplines and behaviours required of the team.
  • Additional coaching support for the leader in implementing changes in the working approach of the team.

Review and evaluation after each session, the team will have the opportunity to assess progress and give feedback to the coach, sharing concerns as well as requests and benefits. This informal ‘check in’ will be supplemented by a formal evaluation of progress against goals towards the end.

The programme is likely to involve approximately 3-4 days of each team member’s time over the course six months. It is essential that team members are clear on this commitment and are prepared to invest this time in their own and the team’s development.
